Roti Canai with Massaman Dipping Sauce
ROTI CANAI
Roti is the flaky, buttery flatbread you smell before you see it. The outside is griddled until it crackles, the inside pulls apart in soft layers, and it comes with a bowl of our massaman curry sauce for dipping.
It came to Thailand with Indian and Malay traders and became a street-food fixture from Bangkok down through the southern provinces. Ours is the canai style: dough stretched thin, folded, and cooked to order. That is where the layers come from.
Order it as a starter for the table (it goes fast) or alongside any curry in place of rice. Tearing off a piece and dragging it through the massaman sauce is the best two-ingredient move on our menu.
If the dipping sauce wins you over, the full massaman curry is the natural next order, and panang curry treats the last piece of bread just as well.
We are on 2nd Ave at 34th Street in Murray Hill, about a five-minute walk from Grand Central. Open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, for dine-in or takeout.
